Rotary is the world’s first service club, founded in Chicago in 1905 by Paul Harris, who wanted to capture in a professional club the same friendly spirit of his childhood home town. He derived the Rotary name from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices. Popularity of Rotary spread quickly. By 1921 rotary clubs had formed in 6 continents. Rotary International was adopted for the organization’s name a year later. As Rotary grew so did its involvement pooling resources and talents to help communities in need. Among Rotary’s goals are to bring an end to Polio and to fund Shelter Boxes for disaster victims.

By July 1925 Rotary had grown to 2,000 clubs and an estimated 108,000 members. Rotary’s distinguished reputation attracted Presidents, Prime Ministers, and a host of luminaries to its ranks. The Four Way Test was created by a Rotarian named Herbert J. Taylor in 1932.

This code of ethics was adopted by Rotary 11 years later.

The test of things we Think, Say or Do…

1. Is it the truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
